    Highland Park Valkyrie

The Valkyrie is the first expression in the new Highland Park Viking Legends series.  It is made with more peated malt than is usual for Highland Park. Highland Park's Tasting Note: A dramatic opening with the sharp tang of sweet green apples and ripening lemons gives way to bewitching oriental spices that tease the senses with a promise of a long, slow seduction.  Creamy vanilla - voluptuous and silky smooth - warps itself around sweet preserved ginger and luscious dark chocolate, soothing and enticing in equal measure with tantalising hints of salty black liquorice and the crackle of a smouldering bonfire.  Exquisitely balanced, waves of warm aromatic smoke and richly ripened fruit.

Benromach 10 Years Old 100 Proof

WSD February Featured Whisky:  This is a great whisky first and foremost but it is the contrast and step-up from the straight 10 Years Old, which in itself is a fine whisky which I always end up scoring highly in competitions, is fascinating.  It is the same cask make-up but it is so much more complex.  Great stuff. This is a gorgeous classic pre-1960's Speyside character at a higher strength; intense and complex yet beautifully balanced with a light touch of smoke.  This is called 100 Proof because once, all whisky in Scotland were measured this old imperial way.  The tradition actually started with rum when sailors wanted to make sure their rations had not been watered down, so they mixed a little spirit with gunpowder.... if it ignited, it's strength was 'proved'.

    Glendronach 21 Years Old Parliament

The new 21 Years Old is created using both Oloroso and Pedro Ximinez sherry casks, and takes its name from the parliament of rooks that have been nesting in the trees overlooking the distillery for almost 200 years.  What The WSD thinks: Intense raisin concentrate on the nose.  Fruit cake and cardamon on the palate, the fruit cake is very well done and baked oranges are added.
