    Bardowie Gin

Made by the Hazell family on the shores of Bardowie Loch. Out of an initial list of 13 ingredients, four that were grown or gathered where the Hazells lived were chosen to contribute to the flavour of Bardowie Gin.

Blackcurrant bushes that were already established when Mark and Alison moved to The Jaw provide the first botanical and the fruit flavour it provides is enhanced by the freshness of bulrush stems which smell like freshly mown lawn. This gives way to a nuttiness from ground elder which, although it is known as a pernicious weed today, was originally brought over by the Romans as a salad leaf – a function which it can still perform as well as rocket or spinach when young. The final ingredient that made it into Bardowie Gin was Bay – from a rather large Bay Tree that flourishes outside Mark and Alison’s kitchen window; this gives a pleasant herby aftertaste to their gin.

The botanicals consist of orange peel, juniper, coriander and angelica root to which are added the unique locally picked botanicals of blackcurrant, bay, bulrush stem and ground elder. The makers say 'The gin is a predominantly citrusy spirit with fresh, grassy and nutty undertones and a distinctive light, and florally refreshing experience which is ‘dangerously drinkable’.' They recommend their gin to be married with equal part fresh water and a torn bay leaf in a large glass full of ice. Alternatively, couple with a Walter Gregor tonic and dehydrated clementine for a longer drink.

    Edinburgh Gin 1670

The distillery says "Bringing together the natural connection between botany and gin distilling, Edinburgh Gin 1670 is the result of an innovative partnership with Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RGBE). This gin draws inspiration from the unearthing of the ‘1670 Physic Garden’, originally created as a source of botanicals for use in medicinal remedies by two pioneering Edinburgh doctors, Robert Sibbald and Andrew Balfour. The result is a contemporary gin that is rooted in a fascinating chapter of Edinburgh’s history. This natural partnership saw our Head Distiller and RGBE’s Head Botanist work for over 12 months to experiment with and refine the recipe. Many of the botanicals in this unique gin would have been found in the original Physic Garden. This includes fennel (seeds and leaves) and sweet cicely, alongside exotic plants such as Piper Leaf, Tasmannia Lanceolata leaf and Tasmanian Mountain Pepper, all freshly picked from RBGE. Bottled at 43% ABV, this distinctive gin can be enjoyed in a classic G&T, served with premium Indian Tonic Water and garnished with a fresh basil leaf. Its crisp notes also complement classic cocktails such as the RBGE Martini, mixed with lemon bitters and garnished with fennel fronds."

This process is unusual, and time consuming, but that’s what it takes to create remarkable depth of flavour - a spirit you’ll never forget." Granite North Gin

Taking its name from the rock so closely associated with the North East of Scotland, Granite North Gin is inspired by the rugged peaks and ancient forests of the Scottish Highlands. Developed for the modern adventurer, Granite North is a smooth Scottish gin packed with flavour. A juniper-forward gin, its fresh, citrus taste is smooth enough to drink on its own or with a light tonic to release even more of its zesty flavour and is robust enough to stand up and stand out in cocktails. Its outdoor personality is revealed in the subtle infusion of Grand Fir needles that complement the native taste of its juniper cousin, helping to summon the fresh aromas of the pure mountain air. The distillery recommend: A double measure (50ml) of Granite North Gin, your favourite premium light tonic water, plenty of large, rugged chunks of chipped ice and a generous curl of fresh grapefruit rind.

    Hepple Gin

The distillery says the notion of what makes a great gin lies at the core of every decision we have made at Hepple. We knew that juniper would be at the heart but only by combining both the ripe and young green stages of the berry can we reveal the full breadth of its life and flavour. Woven into this is an array of botanicals that are as lively in the bottle as they are side by side in the northerly wind. Throughout our experimentation it was imperative that we remain faithful to the extraordinary brightness of each ingredient to make this most flavourful gin. It uses an innovative three-level process for extracting botanical flavours. The heavier ones are distilled with the grain, lighter examples are vacuum distilled, and juniper flavour is extracted using carbon dioxide. The botanicals used are juniper, green juniper, douglas fir, bog myrtle, lovage, blackcurrant leaves, blackcurants, Amalfi lemon, coriander seeds, fennel seeds, liquorice, angelica and orris root.

The Distillery says: "Released annually since 2011, our 100% Islay range is distilled from barley grown in the fields surrounding the distillery before the team malt, distil, mature and eventually bottle onsite; an unmatched, unbroken chain of creation from barley to bottle. Our 100% Islay range remains Scotland’s only Single Farm Single Malt. Distilled from our 2007 and 2009 barley crops, the 9th edition is a vatting of 43 ex-bourbon barrels matured for over 9 years in our on-site dunnage warehouses. Bottled at 50% abv, we’ve released a total of 12,000 bottles. Our 100% Islay spirit pairs seamlessly with ex-bourbon barrels. Deliberately stripped back to an ex- American oak maturation, aged just 5 years old, the .1 edition exposes the structure and presence of the Octomore spirit. Octomore 10.3

Taking on the challenge of growing Islay Barley, he braces the conditions of the wet and wild west coast to combine an exploration of Islay terroir and stratospheric smoke. For the first time, the .3 is matured for six aged years but crucially only in ex-American oak. These top-quality casks have gently coaxed this Octomore spirit into life in Warehouse 16, next to our 10.1 edition. The components of our 10.1 and 10.3 are so similar, the distinct flavour difference must be owed to the barley’s respective growing location."

    The Lakes Gin

The distillery say "The Lakes Gin is lovingly hand crafted in our small copper pot still. Juniper can be found across the fells in The Lake District and we use this local juniper as the very heart of our gin. Using classic gin botanicals augmented with others native to The Lakes - including bilberry, heather and meadowsweet - this is an artisan gin which is complex, intriguing and delicious." The gin has 15 botanicals in total and the distillery recommend you put this in the freezer for a short while before serving.

    The Naked Grouse

This Naked Grouse is a high end blend with the malt content from Macallan and Highland Park. Matured in sherry casks. What The WSD thinks:  Tart on the nose.  Sweet raisin syrup on the palate.  Crowd pleasing and a bar conversation uplifter.  Water tames the tartness and ads creaminess to the concoction binding it together. Nose Distillery:  Black cherries, cocoa powder and oak wood. Taste Distillery:  Sweet, resinous, dried fruits. Spicy cinnamon sticks and nutmeg. Finish Distillery:  Dark chocolate with lingering spiciness. Medium sweet.

Wemyss Family Collection Vanilla Burst Blended Single Malt Whisky Batch 2017/01

Wemyss Malts tell us: The Vanilla Burst is the first release of the Wemyss Family Collection range and is a blend of only 2 Speyside single malts with a light and fruity character that were chosen to mature in 15 1st-fill Ex-bourbon barrels. The 4800 bottles of Vanilla Burst perfectly demonstrate an intense 1st fill bourbon wood influence on a light and sweet Speyside malt Scotch whisky. The taste profile for this is lots of vanilla, spicy and floral with notes of cereal and citrus with a rich fruity mouthfeel.
